One of my top reasons to have an in-home Penticton newborn session is that you get to enjoy the comfort of being in your home in your early postpartum days. As someone who strongly supports the 4th trimester lie-in period, I believe you can have newborn photos without stress!

When you are thinking about having your Penticton photographer come in to your home, just remember that simple is often best! My favourite family photos with a newborn are often taken on your bed or sofa.

What if your baby doesn't have a room of their own? The parents' room and the living room will be great spots for photos. I know, everyone has seen those picture-perfect nurseries on social media. But the truth is - most families do not have a nursery like that. If you do - we will certainly take some photos in there. BUT don't worry if you do not have a room for your baby at all, or if it is not ready yet. I didn’t have one myself when my daughter was a baby - we lived in a one bedroom apartment - so I understand!

So, keep reading - if you want to bring in some variety to your in-home newborn session, here are 5 special things we can incorporate into your Penticton home newborn photography session, no matter what your home is like.

GET OUTSIDE

If the weather is cooperating, lets get outside! If you have a nice pocket of filtered light in your yard, this would be a lovely place for a family photo. And bonus - if you have a toddler sibling who is getting bored inside, they will suddenly be happy outside! Incorporating toys, snow, water, or whatever is there outdoors, will make memorable family photos during your lifestyle newborn photography (or milestone!) session. It helps to take the pressure off and just hang out as a family while I take your photos!

NURSING/FEEDING

At every session, I ask if we can get breastfeeding or bottlefeeding photos. These are my absolute favourite. There is nothing that beats showing the love and connection with your baby than these, and as baby will likely need a feed during the session anyway, its easy! For the mom who wants more intimate postpartum photos, we can talk about a special dedicated breastfeeding session (and I love these for Milestone sessions as well!). However every in-home session has a chance for breastfeeding photos and they make very special memories.

CUDDLES & BABYWEARING

Many parents today are utilizing baby-wearing as a tool for comfort and closeness with their babies. There is a rich cultural history across continents for babywearing. This can be a fabulous tool when your baby just does not want to be put down and at the same time is precious and comforting for mom too. When my daughter was a baby, she was always one of two places: on my chest when we were resting on the couch, or on my chest when she was in a wrap. But what I never got was a nice photo of this when she was a newborn! At your session we can easily take a few minutes to remember this part of your postpartum period.

USING CHERISHED ITEMS

If you are like me, sentimental and nostalgic, you probably have kept outfits from when you were a baby, or a special stuffy or blanket from your childhood. Or maybe grandma has knitted or sewn a newborn outfit or blanket for your little one! Let’s add one of these special items to your session.

READING A SPECIAL BOOK

If baby has an older sibling, there is a good chance you have a book for them about the new baby and being a new big brother or sister. Or, perhaps you just have a favourite childhood book. As a family you can read the book to the baby and in addition to being a sweet memory, this can help settle down an older sibling if they are getting restless (which let’s face it, will most likely happen!)

BONUS IDEA – bring pets (safely) into your family photos! As a mother of a human and cats, some of my favourite photos as my daughter has grown up have been of her and the cats together.

I adore lifestyle at-home newborn sessions for their ease and comfort, and the ability to show off your home as it is during that time (don’t forget photos really are a snapshot of a moment in time). You can easily incorporate a few different things for a variety of photos and memories (and for fun!).
