Welcoming a newborn into your life is a moment filled with joy, a little chaos, and countless memories waiting to be captured. Many first-time parents look for ways to preserve these precious early days without the stress of leaving home. Taking professional newborn photos at home offers a comfortable, intimate setting that reflects your family’s unique story. This guide shares practical tips as we create beautiful, lasting images while keeping your baby calm and comfortable, and the parents too!

Setting the Scene for Lifestyle Newborn Photography at Home
There is no better place than home, right? Your home offers familiar surroundings that help your baby feel safe and relaxed, (and the new parents as well!) as everyone adjusts to this new phase of life. One of my top reasons for enjoying taking Penticton newborn photos in a lifestyle fashion at home is that there is no rushing about to pack up the family. The session starts off calmly when I come to your home. And the last thing a freshly postpartum mom wants to rush out of the house!
So, what do I look for when finding a room or choosing clothing for a lifestyle newborn photoshoot?
Lets keep Penticton lifestyle newborn photos simple at home by:
Choosing a quiet, warm room: Babies are sensitive to temperature changes. A warm room helps keep your newborn comfortable and calm.
Using natural light: Let's look for rooms that have a large window with soft, indirect sunlight. This avoids harsh direct light that can create strong shadows or make your baby squint.
Keeping the background simple: By using neutral-colored blankets, sheets, or curtains, and clothing, we avoid distractions. This keeps the focus on your baby and you.
Gathering props thoughtfully: Soft blankets, a favourite stuffed animal, or a special onesie can add personality without being overwhelming in the photos.

How to Calm a Crying Baby During a Photo Session
Crying is natural for newborns, especially during a photo session when they might feel unsettled.
Please, don't panic! I'm used to it. Here are gentle ways to calm a crying baby:
Swaddling your baby: Wrapping your newborn snugly in a soft blanket mimics the womb’s comfort and can soothe fussiness until they are happy again. I come with a few simple wraps for photos, and otherwise expect baby to be in your arms for the duration of the shoot!
Using white noise: A white noise machine or a gentle shushing sound can help calm your baby by mimicking the sounds they heard before birth.
Offer a pacifier or feed: Sometimes a quick feeding or sucking on a pacifier can settle your baby. I absolutely love capturing photos as you feed baby, whether with breast or bottle!
Rocking or swaying gently: Holding your baby close and moving slowly can provide reassurance.
Taking breaks: If your baby becomes overwhelmed, we will pause the session and allow time to rest.
These calming techniques not only help with newborn photos but also support your baby’s overall comfort during the postpartum period.

Capturing Genuine Moments and Expressions
Newborn photography is not just about posed shots. Some of the most treasured images come from candid moments that show your baby’s personality and your family’s connection. These may just end up your favourites!
Photographing everyday moments: Capturing your baby yawning, stretching, or sleeping peacefully makes very special memories! Documentary-style images of the family (especially with siblings) are fun to have as keepsakes as well. So don't worry about the 'in between' while baby needs to be shushed - I will sneek in photos.
Including parents and siblings: Shots of gentle kisses, or cuddles between siblings and parents are the best part!
Be patient: Let your baby lead the session. Sometimes the best photos happen when you least expect them.

Postpartum Considerations for Parents During a Penticton Newborn Photo Session
The postpartum period can be overwhelming, and photography should be a joyful experience, not a stressful one. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Planning sessions around your baby’s needs: I fully expect the session to go according to the baby (and mom's) needs. If a feed is needed, I hope to get some beautiful candid moments if desired. I also hope that mom feels comfortable after giving birth. If you need a rest, pump break, or to switch where you are sitting, please let me know.
Be kind to yourself: Don’t worry about perfection. The goal is to capture love and connection.
